Funny

Vicky said the other day if you want to ensure you'll never watch a movie again, buy the DVD; although I would add that if it's on TV you'll watch it, but you'll never watch the DVD.

Certified Bananas

Lardy Revenger, renowned raconteur and bon vivant, recently celebrated his 10,000th-read over at Brown that Banana. You really should go have a look at his site (if you've got an hour to kill waiting for it to load!); in my mind, it's a similar experience to viewing Dumb and Dumber or the Barbara Billingsley-jive scene from Airplane!. He holds a mirror up to the absurdity of life and I always leave his blog feeling a little lighter and little more free. Anyhow, he asked some folks to contribute some art to help celebrate and here's my piece:

OtakuScene would like to extend heartfelt high-fives to BTB-badboy, Urian Brown, on the occasion of his 10,000th read. Congratulations Lardy!

We first became acquainted with the man and his work when he entered the
Case Closed/RaiderNation chat-room at O-Scene (see avatar above) where he wowed J-poppers with his naughty brand of schtik and dish. Once directed to Brown that Banana, our lives would never be the same. Just like his idol, Jimmy Kudo, Dr. Brown stays on his grind and stays true to the game. So here's a bit of advice: Don't let the game change you, mang, and O-Scene will be there for the 100k celebration!

It's all kinda manga/VIZ-insidery--an Otaku is a socially awkward person who spends all their time reading manga, watching anime, playing video games or surfing the Internets. Their entire life is make-believe. Case Closed is a manga and anime about a young detective (Jimmy Kudo) whose idol is Sherlock Holmes. If you are a rabid Oakland Raiders fan, you call yourself a member of the RaiderNation. Get it? Lardy's wearing a Sherlock Holmes hat and an eye-patch similar to that of the Raiders mascot. Also, you'll notice there's a little graphic inside the "O" of "Otaku"; that's Inuyasha, from the popular manga/anime of the same name. Here's the source image that I got the idea from: Can you believe this ad is for real?! I didn't even know kids still identified as "Goth." I thought Goth became Emo. Xander, can you clarify??

Hilarious

From a fascinating piece about Bernie Madoff:

But Bernie was moody, and he could make people uncomfortable. At times he would stare wordlessly into space. One former trader remembers being at a holiday party when he noticed that Madoff was glaring at him from across the room. And glaring. And glaring. "You in trouble?" the trader's fiancée whispered to him when she noticed the boss's icy gaze. Uncomfortable, the couple left early; they never got an explanation.

And Madoff could be less than sensitive. One day a female trader remarked to a colleague that she'd had a nightmare about being raped, not realizing that the boss was listening behind her. Bernie piped in: "That's not a nightmare, that's a fantasy."

This man is Shakespeare with a guitar*

Way back in 2000 I use to frequent this photo processing place near my work and this girl that worked there asked me if she could take photos of me for her foto class. I agreed and for some reason never looked at the final project she had sent me. So I'm purging my old yahoo email today which I don't use anymore and I come across her email! Check it out--she used me as the subject for the cover of a Dave Matthews CD! How embarrassing huh? I especially like how I look like a f*#k doll on the front cover.

Avant-Kitsch

Thinking of renaming my blog "Avant-Kitsch." I got the idea after reading an essay from like 1939 by some guy named Clement Greenberg. He was talking about high and low art and it was in this essay where the term "kitsch" first came into being. Anyhow, his whole argument was that modernism (folks like Picasso, aka, "high art") was a reaction against the rise of consumer society, or "kitsch" as he described it. So he drew this line in the sand between the avant-garde and the "kitsch." As for me, I like the mix-and-match approach and think everything's game... so there you have it--avant-kitsch--get it?

So yay or nay, what do you say?

Go humans go

So are Quakers aliens? That reminds me of one of the most ignorant people I ever met. My friend was dating this girl and we all went to a nightclub with a friend of hers. She started talking some really weird stuff. She said "so if black people are evoluted (her wording, not mine) from monkeys (and we're not?) and Asians are aliens..." I really didn't even know how to respond to someone who truly believed this. Asians are aliens? I could've turned it into a Geraldo shouting-match, but I just kept my distance the rest of the evening.
