Linkedout

Check out how much of a joke my Linkedin profile is. Doesn't even list my current job--although my blog is listed (but it's in the wrong field and there's no URL) . No recommendations, only six connections--and for some reason they think I went to college in Egypt!

Chefography: Jon's Street Eats

photo: insidebayarea.com

My brother-in-law, Jon Kosorek, has a distinguished pedigree in the culinary arts. After plying his trade for years as sous chef or executive chef in the brick-and-mortar game, Jon decided to take his mortar and pestle to the streets. He hooked himself up with a kitchen-on-wheels and you can find him all over the East Bay from Emeryville to the Piedmont Ave. area.

If you happen upon this entrepreneurial whirlwind and his shiny silver truck, expect a high-brow hot plate delivered unpretentiously by the humble magnificent, J-Kos. His menu is seasonal and has included hand-pulled mozzarella with heirloom tomatoes; chicken liver mousse; caesar salad with house cured anchovies or sardines; ratatouille with house pasta; mozzarella panini with gazpacho; "scrapple" with grilled greens; white bean bruschetta and duck tacos with a pomegranate cucumber salsa.

I took the family to Oakland during his first week of operation and sampled the fresh mozzarella, the B.L.A.T. (house-smoked bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato sandwich), and homemade mint ice cream. Verdict? A Street-sweeping game-changer. By that I mean the competition better step up or be swept aside. Jon's Street eats is redefining street food--be a part of the movement.

Font Land

As most of you fruits know, I'm a big font fanatic. It's a good thing the History Channel has been running marathons of their Peabody award-winning documentary Font Land. It chronicles the rise of all the big graphic designer motorcycle gangs from the early '60s and beyond. Many of these typographic rebels would go on to become productive members of the design establishment, founding influential branding and corporate identity firms. The guy pictured above (A.M. Cassandre) created the Peignot typeface which is tattooed on his knuckles. This modernist masterwork saw heavy usage in the ad campaigns of the '40s but fell out of favor as tastes began to skew towards less decorative headings. But as you can see Peignot enjoyed a renaissance in the '70s: And look who's back for a little gallery hopping!Or perhaps a football match:Or maybe you'd like to join Mr. Peignot for an open house tour (I know--not too exciting--it was the only semi-interesting 3rd option available):

Blame it on marketing?

My wife recently gave me two of my favorite '80s comedies: Blame it on Rio and Nightshift. I frantically teared open the boxes only to realize the original cover art--which in both cases was beyond tits IMO--was replaced by some new bullshit cover art! Now for my optometrist impression--which is better, number 1:or 2:One more time please--do you prefer number 1:or number 2:Shoulda stayed number 1 in both cases, right? Tastes change, I suppose. The era of the R-rated sex comedy is long gone. Perhaps they just don't know how to market these films anymore. Then why not just keep the original art? Maybe it looks dated? Probably just some licensing issue. Okay bye for now.

Bloopers

Man I love them bloopers... there was a ski resort ad they had posted in bus stops a while back which showed a skier blasting through fresh powder and the heading above said "Screw Prozac." Skiing is a great mood enhancer. As are bloopers. Here's a recent sampling that lifted my weary soul the other day:
