Certified Bananas

Lardy Revenger, renowned raconteur and bon vivant, recently celebrated his 10,000th-read over at Brown that Banana. You really should go have a look at his site (if you've got an hour to kill waiting for it to load!); in my mind, it's a similar experience to viewing Dumb and Dumber or the Barbara Billingsley-jive scene from Airplane!. He holds a mirror up to the absurdity of life and I always leave his blog feeling a little lighter and little more free. Anyhow, he asked some folks to contribute some art to help celebrate and here's my piece:

OtakuScene would like to extend heartfelt high-fives to BTB-badboy, Urian Brown, on the occasion of his 10,000th read. Congratulations Lardy!

We first became acquainted with the man and his work when he entered the
Case Closed/RaiderNation chat-room at O-Scene (see avatar above) where he wowed J-poppers with his naughty brand of schtik and dish. Once directed to Brown that Banana, our lives would never be the same. Just like his idol, Jimmy Kudo, Dr. Brown stays on his grind and stays true to the game. So here's a bit of advice: Don't let the game change you, mang, and O-Scene will be there for the 100k celebration!

It's all kinda manga/VIZ-insidery--an Otaku is a socially awkward person who spends all their time reading manga, watching anime, playing video games or surfing the Internets. Their entire life is make-believe. Case Closed is a manga and anime about a young detective (Jimmy Kudo) whose idol is Sherlock Holmes. If you are a rabid Oakland Raiders fan, you call yourself a member of the RaiderNation. Get it? Lardy's wearing a Sherlock Holmes hat and an eye-patch similar to that of the Raiders mascot. Also, you'll notice there's a little graphic inside the "O" of "Otaku"; that's Inuyasha, from the popular manga/anime of the same name. Here's the source image that I got the idea from: Can you believe this ad is for real?! I didn't even know kids still identified as "Goth." I thought Goth became Emo. Xander, can you clarify??

Emo is like what Vicky was in high school: Lots of eyeliner, colored hair, scene music, etc.
Goth is like: "RAWR! THE DARK LORD GOMBAX WILL RISE AGAIN AND EAT OUR SOULS INTO ORGASIM!!!"

but kids your age still are goth? I thought that subculture was obsolete,

Vic was not Emo; she was New Wave. Exhibit 1: Bangs

you're right, anyanka--but the point xanderson was making was that new wave became emo; goth never became emo--goth is still goth; not sure if I agree (about new wave becoming emo)

I wonder what Vic thinks of Xander and Zeenat commenting on her "style" back in the '80s. Very amusing piece on Urian -- he must have been pleased with your contribution.

I had lunch with the Brown Banana on Sunday afternoon and he said as soon as he got D-man's piece he did 100 naked jumping jacks on the highway during midday traffic. : )
