Gymskie

I work out at USF's Koret Gym near my house. It's a nice gym but they have lots of rules. Most of them make sense but others seem a little unnecessary. There's a bunch of signs that say "No jeans allowed in Cardio Alley." Jeans seem an odd choice for workout wear but why ban them? And why is the ban only applicable to Cardio Alley? Then, in the weight room, there's a sign that says "Do not leave personal items in one space while you work out. You must move keys and magazines and other items with you from station to station." Seems arbitrary and draconian.

One rule that I think is good applies to the locker room. It says "Out of respect for other members, once you've finished drying off, please wrap yourself in a towel immediately." I've worked out at a number of gyms where this rule should be in place. Like at Northpoint's 24 hour fitness. There was an elderly man with a pony tail who carried a crude walking stick with him out of the shower. He would handle all manner of his grooming completely naked. Took like an hour sometimes. And I watched every minute of it. Lardy, don't you party with that guy? I think I saw you two--along with the garbage bag showerer--at the Ocean beach windmills once.

I grew up with some real comedians

Like one time I was hanging out with my friend Marty. I left the room and didn't realize it until my mom had called and left a message the next day, but he had changed my outgoing message on my answering machine to this:

Hi, you've reached The Violator--America's first all-male gay hotline. If you'd like to get it on with two horny ballplayers in the dugout, press one NOW; if you'd like to party with a hot and leathery gang of musty, mustachoied bikers, press two now; and if you've always wondered what it was like with your hot naked grandfather figure, press three now...

There were some other ones I wish I could remember. He was obsessed with phone sex. When those lines first came out he called me and said hey, can you call me back at my Grandmother's? He gave me a 976 number and I didn't even question it because it was a just another prefix at the time. He also told me when he was staying at some weird boarding house he had made friends with a bunch of Japanese exchange students who were living there. He said he called a bunch of those numbers on his friend Sayuri's phone. I was like, aww man, that's fucked up--what if she asks you about it? He said she wouldn't even notice or understand the charges. He was probably right.

Bjorn Again

The Bjorn has been indispensable in our household since Claudia's arrival--a real godsend. When nothing seems to soothe lil Claudsie, I pop her in this Swedish marvel and she feels right at home. Just like she was Bjorn on the grass at Wimbledon. This is a method I used before we purchased the Bjorn:Oh and speaking of Wimbledon, just thought I'd post this again:

I know--really juvenile--but the way Chuck Willery accentuates his name really elevates this to high comedy.

Sting made me cry today

My folks came by for a visit with a stack of beat-up LPs that had been collecting dust in their crawl space for 30 years. There was Saxon's Power and the Glory, The FIXX's entire catalogue, that Suzanne Vega record with "Luka" on it, Starship's Knee-deep in the Hoopla; I could continue but I think you get the picture--not too many keepers. I did notice an old Sting album from 1987--Nothing Like the Sun. I remember he did a great version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" on that record. So I'm hanging out with my baby in her Baby Bjorn and I start playing this song. Here's the chorus:

When I’m sad she comes to me
with a thousand smiles
she gives to me free

I look down at Claudia and she's smiling and having a great time and I realize she's my "little wing" that Sting is singing about! Always ready with a smile to lift me up and melt my heart at the same time. And then it hit me like a ton of bricks. Yup--the crying game. I wasn't expecting fatherhood to be so emotional.

Not connecting

Not Connecting is a new feature at the nightcap. I will highlight different ads and graphics that don't work. This one's
from an ad that I saw on the back of the bus this morning. This was put out by SFEnvironment--a non-profit organization run by the City and County of San Francisco. It's supposed to clarify the division of recyclables--which items go in the green cart and which go in the blue. Is that clear at first glance? I remember driving and seeing this ad and just wondering what in the hell the message was.

Kinda reminds me of this piece I read recently on Shepherd Fairey. I had always wondered what the idea was behind his OBEY campaign. This snippet from SFGate breaks it down here:

...he first earned notoriety in the late '80s for his obtuse "obey" stickers that featured a mug shot of the late wrestler Andre the Giant. Fairey has called the stickers "an experiment in phenomenology," one in which he hoped viewers would be so confounded by the absurdity of the image they would question other visual messages they come across in their daily lives.

Exclusives

Today was a big day on Today. Viewers were treated not only to an exclusive one-on-one with Jermaine Jackson at Neverland but also to the first interview with Billy Mays's best friend and business partner, Anthony Sullivan. I feel like I've made a good choice switching over from Mornings on 2. Sorry to Sal, Tori, Steve and
Dave--you guys felt like old friends but never gave me that sham-wow factor. Oh and will you guys ever be granted an interview with Speidi? Nope--that exclusive will always go to Al Roker. In case you missed it, Al wasted no time firing shots: Are you guys proud of yourselves? That's some great television.

sidenote: Is Jermaine gay? Vicky asked me this morning and I wasn't sure.

Ebony and Irony

I found it interesting to learn that Michael Jackson had arranged for the rights to the Beatles' catalogue to transfer back to Paul McCartney in the event of his death; for a price, of course.

DP confessional sidenote: about a half hour before he officially died, all the news outlets were reporting only that Jacko had been rushed to the hospital and was in a coma. TMZ was the first to go further and announce his death. But no reputable newspaper or network would support this claim until they were certain. I was bored at home at the time and was hoping TMZ was right! If only so I could enjoy the media circus that would follow. Does that make me a bad person? But, I should mention that when the LA Times said he died, I was very sad. :(

I hate this guy

I'm not one to denounce complete strangers on my blog, but I'll make an exception today--doesn't that dude on the right look like a punk-ass bitch? I know this isn't helping to increase my love footprint on the earth, but I look at my photos a lot and every time I come across this one I get this visceral feeling from deep within my soul about this guy. I want to hurt him. What is it about him? Is this an irrational hatred?

Perhaps I should just delete the photo from my computer.

Other Directed

I was checking out this foto pool on Flickr called "stick figures in peril." This one's an Italian subway sign warning riders to not get stuck in the doors:I loved this graphic the moment I saw it and was thinking of ways to flip it. Couldn't you see one of these tapping into some sort of youth culture/anti-establishment line of thinking? If I slapped one of these on a T-shirt and got Travis Barker or DJ AM to wear one, I could be in business. I'm of a mind to print these suckers up and get a booth at Lollapalooza and Ozzfest. Who wants to go halfsies and come with me? Need any more convincing? Remember those beyond-wack Why Be Normal?/Subvert the dominant paradigm T-shirts and bumper stickers? If that can take off why can't this?

DP Confessionals 2

When I was like 13 years old I had this cooler, more outgoing best friend (I'll call him Fred) who was this skater/graffiti kid. He carried around multiple sharpies and his tag was "suave." Here's my horrible rendition of it:I followed with my own tag (debonair) and completely ripped him
off--both stylistically and thematically--check it out:Fred never called me on it, surprisingly. I guess he was flattered--or maybe he just felt sorry for me. Anyhow, we were really close but also very competitive. We would have these heated three hour, one-on-one hoop sessions in the middle of the night. If there were no lights we'd just leave the car headlights on--we were grimey like that. We also had this history of doing fucked up things to each other. Like one time me and him and like five other mates were in his backyard sitting on this bench next to this plum tree. All of the plums were rotten and had fallen to the ground. And out of nowhere he just picks up a bunch of the plums and starts pelting me with them! He ruined my favorite shirt at the time which was this mauve, jersey-style Hawaii '85 shirt with 3/4 sleeves. Got a big laugh out of everybody. Then, one time we were at Colonial Donuts at like 3 in the morning (we'd all snuck out of our houses and met there). Fred was all ready to dive into this fresh and pristine maple bar which was sitting on the table between us. I looked at him and made this inverted peace sign gesture with my right hand and then brought both fingers down right into the middle of his donut. I felt I'd evened the score but looking back that was really tame. Then, I got a brand-new Diamond Back BMX bike for Christmas and rode down to Rainbow Records to buy the new Motley Crue album, Shout at the Devil I think it was. I had left my bike (unlocked) right in front of the store. When I leave the store, I notice my bike is gone! I start panicking, running down the street and yelling "Thief, thief! Someone stole my bike! Help me!" I think I might've even been crying. I turn the corner and there Fred is with my bike and two other friends. His accomplices were in stitches although I remember he seemed contrite after witnessing my very public emotional breakdown. Then one summer we went to Tahoe with a bunch of friends and stayed at his friend's mom's condo with her. She was one of those extremely permissive moms and she let us all drink. I think it was one of the first times I got really, really drunk. There was this girl, Tasha, who was staying in a condo across the way from us. She was hanging out and it was clear to everyone but me that she liked Fred and that I should give them some alone time. Never did. I continued to "salt his game" (popular slang of that time meaning "to cockblock") the entire weekend. He never got to make out with Tasha. He didn't hassle me about until like a year later when he said something like "Danny, you really blew it that weekend for me... that's cool though you were drunk. You're still my boy." He knew it wasn't intentional. Girls were new and exciting. I had a jumpy trigger finger and no self-control. I was eager to play but didn't know the rules of the game.

Years passed and we became less close but we still saw each other occasionally. He was living with his girlfriend who I'll call Jane. I'd hang out with them and couldn't ignore the chemistry I had with Jane. I think we all saw it coming. They broke up and within a month I was seeing Jane. Neither of us were looking to hurt him--we fell in love. All is fair in love and war (*), right? Yeah, right. I don't think my friend saw it like that. I stabbed him in the back and there's no gray area between betrayal and loyalty. I did know the rules at that point. Anyhow, ten years have passed and we've all moved on. I don't talk to either of them anymore. He hates me. Or actually, he pretends I don't exist, which is much weirder and worse in a way. I've run into him several times and he just looks right through me. The first time I ran into him was at the Rockridge Bart station. I was entering and he was exiting; he looked away after we locked eyes and mumbled some form of acknowledgement; I turned around to follow him but it was too late. He was gone. So I tried getting his new phone number from a mutual friend; I knew he had zero interest in talking to me or reconciling, I really just wanted to give him a chance to tell me to fuck off. So he calls and leaves a message for me precisely at midnight. He says, "Dan, I hear you were trying to get in touch with me and after what happened I don't really have anything to say to you. You can just go your way and I'll go my way." I don't even remember if he said bye or not. All these years later I'm still haunted by what happened. I still have these dreams where we're hanging out and he forgives me and it feels like old times again. What's sad is that aside from my wife, he's the only other person that I've been really close to my entire life. He once said when he got married that'd I'd for sure be his best man. Sorry I ruined that one, Fred. So if you're out there, just know that I not only hurt you, I hurt myself.

* When all of this was going down, I was an emotional basketcase. So much so that I went to see a therapist for the first time in my life. I explained to her how I had these feelings for this girl but didn't want to hurt my best friend; How do I talk to him about it, I wondered? I was looking for a practical, real-world solution and all she could offer me was a Stevie Wonder lyric; a worthless platitude: All is fair in love and war. Oh and she also wanted to put me on Prozac. Never saw her again--can someone recommend another therapist?

I'm a big collector of photos. The sequence you see here is a sampling of images I found after typing "cobra" in the search bar. Certified Bananas

Lardy Revenger, renowned raconteur and bon vivant, recently celebrated his 10,000th-read over at Brown that Banana. You really should go have a look at his site (if you've got an hour to kill waiting for it to load!); in my mind, it's a similar experience to viewing Dumb and Dumber or the Barbara Billingsley-jive scene from Airplane!. He holds a mirror up to the absurdity of life and I always leave his blog feeling a little lighter and little more free. Anyhow, he asked some folks to contribute some art to help celebrate and here's my piece:

OtakuScene would like to extend heartfelt high-fives to BTB-badboy, Urian Brown, on the occasion of his 10,000th read. Congratulations Lardy!

We first became acquainted with the man and his work when he entered the
Case Closed/RaiderNation chat-room at O-Scene (see avatar above) where he wowed J-poppers with his naughty brand of schtik and dish. Once directed to Brown that Banana, our lives would never be the same. Just like his idol, Jimmy Kudo, Dr. Brown stays on his grind and stays true to the game. So here's a bit of advice: Don't let the game change you, mang, and O-Scene will be there for the 100k celebration!

It's all kinda manga/VIZ-insidery--an Otaku is a socially awkward person who spends all their time reading manga, watching anime, playing video games or surfing the Internets. Their entire life is make-believe. Case Closed is a manga and anime about a young detective (Jimmy Kudo) whose idol is Sherlock Holmes. If you are a rabid Oakland Raiders fan, you call yourself a member of the RaiderNation. Get it? Lardy's wearing a Sherlock Holmes hat and an eye-patch similar to that of the Raiders mascot. Also, you'll notice there's a little graphic inside the "O" of "Otaku"; that's Inuyasha, from the popular manga/anime of the same name. Here's the source image that I got the idea from: Can you believe this ad is for real?! I didn't even know kids still identified as "Goth." I thought Goth became Emo. Xander, can you clarify??

Hilarious

From a fascinating piece about Bernie Madoff:

But Bernie was moody, and he could make people uncomfortable. At times he would stare wordlessly into space. One former trader remembers being at a holiday party when he noticed that Madoff was glaring at him from across the room. And glaring. And glaring. "You in trouble?" the trader's fiancée whispered to him when she noticed the boss's icy gaze. Uncomfortable, the couple left early; they never got an explanation.

And Madoff could be less than sensitive. One day a female trader remarked to a colleague that she'd had a nightmare about being raped, not realizing that the boss was listening behind her. Bernie piped in: "That's not a nightmare, that's a fantasy."

This man is Shakespeare with a guitar*

Way back in 2000 I use to frequent this photo processing place near my work and this girl that worked there asked me if she could take photos of me for her foto class. I agreed and for some reason never looked at the final project she had sent me. So I'm purging my old yahoo email today which I don't use anymore and I come across her email! Check it out--she used me as the subject for the cover of a Dave Matthews CD! How embarrassing huh? I especially like how I look like a f*#k doll on the front cover.

Avant-Kitsch

Thinking of renaming my blog "Avant-Kitsch." I got the idea after reading an essay from like 1939 by some guy named Clement Greenberg. He was talking about high and low art and it was in this essay where the term "kitsch" first came into being. Anyhow, his whole argument was that modernism (folks like Picasso, aka, "high art") was a reaction against the rise of consumer society, or "kitsch" as he described it. So he drew this line in the sand between the avant-garde and the "kitsch." As for me, I like the mix-and-match approach and think everything's game... so there you have it--avant-kitsch--get it?

So yay or nay, what do you say?

Go humans go

So are Quakers aliens? That reminds me of one of the most ignorant people I ever met. My friend was dating this girl and we all went to a nightclub with a friend of hers. She started talking some really weird stuff. She said "so if black people are evoluted (her wording, not mine) from monkeys (and we're not?) and Asians are aliens..." I really didn't even know how to respond to someone who truly believed this. Asians are aliens? I could've turned it into a Geraldo shouting-match, but I just kept my distance the rest of the evening.

I'm trying to come up with a new phrase to compete with "No worries!" Not really feeling "no vexations!" How about "No woes!" or "No anguish!" Or maybe "no concerns!" Actually maybe no vexations is the best one.

Oops, sorry man!

That's all good, dog--no vexations!

Fair-use fatties?

You know when ever there's a public health segment on the news they always show below-the-neck footage of fat people walking around? Do they have to get model-release forms from these folks? Probably not I'm guessing, but if they put me up there I'd be pissed.
